May 17, 2011NEW YORK/TORONTO — Chicago Blackhawks right wing Theoren Fleury has been cleared to return to play following a period of rehabilitation in the joint National Hockey League/National Hockey League Players’ Association Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health Program.
On October 8, 2002, Fleury entered an intensive outpatient and follow-up program and has since been monitored under the care and counseling of the program doctors, Dr. Dave Lewis on behalf of the NHL and Dr. Brian Shaw on behalf of the NHLPA. Fleury has participated fully and has been cooperative in his intensive treatment program. He will now participate in an intensive aftercare plan monitored by the program doctors.
The NHL and the NHLPA implemented the program in 1996 with the primary objectives being education, treatment and rehabilitation for NHL players and their families.
